This months Daring Cooks challenge was Moo Shu and it had nothing to do with cows!
Moo shu is one of my husbands favorite foods so I was going against tough competition, as he has eaten this in so many different places.
First up was the hoisin sauce. This stuff smelled so good I really was tempted to put it in a glass and just sip on it or dab a little behind my ears. Let's just say that I didn't sip on it and my husband paid lots of attention to me that day.
Next up was the pancakes. I tried the two in one method and it worked out alright. I just have to work at making them thinner next time. Mine turned out more like tortillas than the Mandarin type pancakes that I am use to, but they were still very good. I also recruited my son to help out and he was a fantastic "initial pressing" for the pancakes.
The biggest issue that I had with making the pancakes was that no matter how much the dough rested it was so elastic that it always wanted to shrink back down to an itsy bitsy size. I will have to work on this next time I make them.
Finally, it was time for the moo shu pork and I broke out the GIANT wok steamer that my brother had given me many years ago. It made the whole process much easier because it was so large. No really, it is huge! I could stir fry a whole large turkey if the mood ever hit me. I followed the Daring Cooks recipe but took out the bamboo shoots and added carrots. It was easier than I thought it would be and we ate almost all of it, leaving just enough for my husband to scavenge later that night.
All in all, another great challenge and lots of fun was had by everyone. My parents are getting spoiled with all of these yummy dinners they are having. Thanks to the Shelley of C Mom Cook and her sister of The Crafts of Mommyhood for a fun challenge. Check out the Daring Kitchen site to see what other people did with the challenge.
Till next time!
The October Daring Cooks' Challenge was hosted by Shelley of C Mom Cook and her sister Ruth of The Crafts of Mommyhood. They challenged us to bring a taste of the East into our home kitchens by making our own Moo Shu, including thin pancakes, stir fry and sauce.

I am so glad that this was a hit, and that it met with the approval of a Moo Shu fan :) And can I just say that I have total wok envy?? Really wonderful work. Thanks so much for cooking with us this month!
Your story was fun to read. I should have left the shoots out als well and changes them into carrots. It looks great.

Your moo shu looks great - and fromthe responce it got, I gather it tasted at least as good! I am so glad you were able to cook with us, and I am thrilled that we could add something special to your recipe box!!
Parents deserve to be spoiled by daughters who are really good cooks! Parents will always find the time to put aside whatever they are doing and help savor some fantastic dish.
I heard from The Monkey Queen's parents the last time I received a carrier pigeon from them that they thought the moo shu was superb.
