Facile Friday - The view from here

GMTO.org
If you held a dime in your hand and looked closely at the face on it then threw it 200 miles away and turned the telescope on that dime, you could still focus on the face like you did when it was in your hand.  That is an amazing telescope!
I am completely fascinated by the Giant Magellan Telescope that is being built.  It just sounds so amazing!  Given that I am currently feeling short on words and am locked on this telescope info I have found, that is what my post will be today.

The most fascinating thing is that the mirrors that are being cast for the telescope are over 27 feet in diameter!  27.6 to be exact and that is definitely how they are handling this...right down to 1 millionth of an inch.  The glass chunks for the mirrors are being heated to 2100 degrees and then this giant centrifuge is spun to assist the molten glass in taking the shape of the mold.  Next step is to cool it down slowly over a month to lessen the chance of defects.  Oh yea, and this is all being done under the football stadium.  Really, you gotta love this kind of new technical advancement.

Here is a cool video of what the telescope will look like: The Giant Magellan Telescope, GMTO.

Live long and prosper!
