Facile Friday - What a year!

Every year we plant a garden, but some years are better than others.
This year has been a banner year for our garden.  Even the corn did pretty well.  We planted a pretty good variety of veggies this year; corn, brussel sprouts, cucumbers, kale, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, patti pan squash, zucchini, watermelon, orange, purple and pablano peppers.

Let's take a little tour shall we?  Here is a picture of our garden in the back of our house.  Right there in the lower part of the photo are my pride and joy, the squash.

Some of the leaves on the zucchini are almost 2 feet across!  There are both zucchini and patti pans in that giant mass of mega leaves.

See that giant zucchini hiding under the regular size one?

Yea!  Patti pan.  Sometimes I see these at farmer's markets and they sell them as flying saucer squash, I love that.

I see you, hiding down there you yummy, frilly little veggie

This is kale.  It is absolutely the best green around.  It is good sauteed with garlic, steamed, on pizza, in mashed potatoes and just about any other way you can think to use it.  Look how pretty it is too.

We have two kinds of tomatoes, a black Russian heritage and San Marzanos.  The giant green one is the black Russian.  They are truly beautiful when they are ripe.

Here is the inside of a ripe black Russian.

The San Marzanos are smaller but pack a huge flavor and make killer sauces.  We are soon to be flooded with these little rubies.

Purple sweet peppers are looking great.  We haven't harvested any of these yet but I can hardly wait.

The cucumbers are crazy and just keep coming.  They are everywhere and we can't control them.

As you can see, some of these cucumbers try to move beyond the confines of their area and the green fence stops them in their tracks.  I have had to extricate some of them from the fence by cutting the fence around them.

In a month or so we will have one of my favorites...brussel sprouts.  They look nice so far.

And now I would like to introduce you to the crowning glory of our garden this year.  This is a small but super sweet watermelon.  Yet another garden produce that we have to wait for, but I really don't mind.

There you have it, our garden.  Mind you, this garden looks the way it does in the middle of a huge drought.  Our lawn may be crunchy but our garden is flourishing.

If you happen to be in the area please feel free to stop by and we will load you up...cucumber anyone?
