Not being an only child myself, I don't completely understand what it is like to have to search out playmates. Max has a passion for this kind of reconnaissance and today was no exception. A beautiful sunny Saturday meant that we went on our occasional quest to find some of the kids in our neighborhood that he plays with, but alas, the streets were empty. "Where is everybody? Oh, Man!" The disappointment was hard to swallow.
Heading back home we turned down the alley and found some really cool old windows that had been thrown out. "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Max asked what the heck that meant. I mentioned that I was going to take one of these old garbage windows and do something cool with it. Max looked at me with some confusion. "What are you going to do with an old window?" "I am going to create some great art!" was my reply. We kept walking toward home.
Max started to think about what he would do with an old window and came up with some pretty good ideas. "I could paint on them or...you know they look like lots of little picture frames." And the creative pursuits began in earnest! For the next 3 hours we would brainstorm all kinds of ideas and Max would draw mountains of pictures, from the incredible hulk to Squidward and all manner of construction equipment. He finally decided that he needed his own window so we went back and garbage picked another one. Finally he had his concept all worked out and, with a little help he executed a masterpiece of color and theme.
All in all, our failed attempt to secure him a rough and ready group of boys to pal around with for the day became a wonderful exercise in the creative process. Max, sat in the backyard and looked at the finished product and declared it "Awesome!". I guess it worked out just fine.
Please always remember and don't ever forget:
"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.”
George Bernard Shaw
