October is...

4 generations, the youngest is me

October is the month in which Halloween is celebrated, when apples are harvested and cozy sweaters come out of storage.  October is also the month that we appreciate those people who annoy us by making us sit still or smile on cue or maybe strike some strange or awkward pose.  They are always clicking away in the background and sometimes right there in your face.  They are the photographers, picture takers, capturers of that moment in time.

Happy National Photographers Appreciation Month!

My father is a photographer and he spent my childhood snapping photos and even had a darkroom in our basement.  Just in case you are too young to know what a darkroom is, you use to have to go into a darkroom to take a special cylinder called film out of your camera so that you could immerse it in noxious chemicals to magically make the images you took appear on the special silver halide coated acetate medium. Weird huh?

My cool dad
When I was in high school, I too had the bug and took quite a few photography classes.  I continued to take photos but have never been one of THOSE photographers who carried their camera with them all the time, just in case a photo opportunity arose.  I still take photos, just look at most posts on this blog, but my little brother has taken up photography as more than just a hobby or for fun, he is working to be a hire gun or camera if you prefer.  He is pretty talented too.  Check out some of his work here.

So I am sending loads of appreciation out to my dad and my brother (and some to myself too) for taking the time to document the life that happen around us all.  I love nothing better than finding old photos and reminiscing about "way back then".
