A Mother's Day Adventure

Happy little strawberries
Ah, Mother’s Day, a time for children and fathers to pay special attention to the moms in their life.
I believe that it is the day when others discover how much mom does by stepping into her shoes this one time per year.  Cooking, cleaning, getting up with the little ones, cleaning up fido’s barf from the dining room rug, collecting the 6 pairs of shoes off the living room floor to give back to the 2 people who own them, and a myriad of other ridiculous daily chores that no one sees.

I had a good mother’s day that began with wench toast, fresh squeezed orange juice, and sides of peanut butter and bananas (my favorite) to go on the wench toast.  My son had set up a “lounging area” where I had pillows and fuzzy soft blankets to avail myself of.  We played some video games and then took a trip to Home Depot to purchase some plants for our vegetable garden.

Excited to be working the farm
“Look mom!  Onion chives, just like the ones I like!  We should plant these in our garden.”  As Max chomped away on the onion chives he loves so much, I had no idea that he had ever had them before, we found peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, gooseneck squash, and strawberries.  Max pointed out that we could have a pizza garden, growing things to build a pizza with.  We then decided that a pizza, BBQ, and Mexican food garden would cover all the bases.
Romping in the straw

Back home we dug into our garden’s lasagna compost.  Last fall we laid down about 8 inches of straw, dries leaves, yucky apples from our tree, cardboard, and peat moss.  After sitting under a blanket of snow and then all of the thaw and rain we have had, we have a freakishly potent blanket of rotting goodness and not a single weed to be seen.  This little experiment just might work out well, what with all of that rot to feed the roots of our veggies.

Max and I had fun planting and playing and as you can see he was being extra cheeky!

I wandered the yard and enjoyed seeing all of the colorful tulips that had reached adulthood, as well as the bleeding heart plant that Max got me last year for mother’s day, that I was afraid was not going to come back.  That plant even managed to spit out 2 little heart flowers just for the occasion.  Here is some of what we found in the yard.
Overall, it was a good day even if I had to clean out the fridge!

I hope all of the mothers out there had a wonderful day being remembered and appreciated.
