One pattipan, One blueberry and some gangly broccoli |
We worked really hard on our lasagna garden and have been disappointed by it thus far, but suddenly all of our plants are growing by leaps and bounds and spitting out what could be a truly bountiful harvest in a few weeks. Let me show you what we have in our garden and a few extras in other spots in our yard.
Right outside our backdoor is our not-so-little herb garden. We planted the herbs in cinder blocks, mostly to keep the mint under control and they have ll gone crazy. We literally have mini mint and basil bushes! Both the mint and basil are going to get thinned out and frozen. A woman I met this week told me that in Italy they sell various herb in a frozen state and they last a couple of months that way.
Next on the tour is our blueberry bush. It is small but is quite the producer of large berries. I think it has all of 3 branches and look what just one of them is doing! Yummy!!
Calamondin oranges are a cross between a mandarin orange and a kumquat and are very tart. They can be used as a substitute for lemons or limes when cooking and apparently make a great lemonade drink or marmalade. I think I can work with that!
In keeping with the kumquat reference that was just made, we have a limequat. Now this is what I am waiting for because these are just like key limes and can create a wonderful substitute when make the infamous key lime pie. I just wish they would ripen faster. Both the calamondin and the limequat are potted so that they can be brought inside in the fall and winter months. They are doing really well outside right now though and they look nice on the red chip border of our yard.
My pond garden is in full bloom and I love the wild look it has. Buttercups, bloody dock, day lilies and a few others fill in around the pond making it all look very natural.
Our garden area is separated from the yard by a fence and this works well to keep the dog out of the space. So here is what we have in our garden, though I did not take pictures of any broccoli or peppers because they are just not so happy looking. I will keep an eye on them and post pictures if they start to produce anything by tears for their sad condition.
Our spring weather was cold and rainy and this appears to have slowed growth in our garden dramatically. It looks like we are a few weeks behind for harvesting but it is coming quickly now with all of the hot weather. I can't wait for the harvest to start in earnest. Till then I will spend my time picking and freezing the overflow of herbs I have.
To all of you I wish growth and abundance!
